What Is LANAP® Laser Treatment for Gum Disease?

LANAP stands for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure—and the name tells you exactly what makes it special. Rather than cutting into your gums with a scalpel and stitching them back together (the old-school approach), LANAP uses the FDA-cleared PerioLase® MVP-7™ dental laser to remove diseased tissue and bacteria from deep within your gum pockets while leaving every bit of healthy tissue completely untouched.

It’s the only laser treatment to receive FDA clearance for true periodontal regeneration—meaning it doesn’t just clean up the damage; it actually stimulates your body to regrow the gum and bone tissue that gum disease destroys. No other laser protocol can make that claim.

LANAP has been used successfully since receiving FDA clearance in 2004. In the two decades since, it’s become the gold standard for patients who want real results without real surgery.

Why Gum Disease Deserves Serious Attention (And Fast Treatment)

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease or periodontitis, is more common than most people realize. Nearly half of American adults over age 30 have some form of it, according to the CDC. The trouble is, it rarely hurts in its early stages, so many people don’t know they have it until the damage is already significant.

Left untreated, periodontal disease doesn’t stay in your mouth. Research published in a 2026 American Heart Association statement found that gum disease is independently associated with a significantly increased risk of heart attack, stroke, atrial fibrillation, and other serious cardiovascular events. The mechanism is inflammation: bacteria from infected gum pockets can enter the bloodstream, trigger chronic systemic inflammation, and have been found inside the arterial plaque that causes clogged arteries.

The connection goes further. For patients managing diabetes, gum disease and high blood sugar form a vicious cycle—each one makes the other harder to control. Emerging 2025–2026 research has also explored links between untreated periodontal disease and cognitive decline.

Treating gum disease isn’t just about saving your teeth. It’s about protecting your overall health. And the sooner you address it, the better the outcome—for your mouth and your body.

Signs you may need treatment:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath that doesn’t go away
  • Gums that appear to be pulling away from your teeth
  • Teeth that feel loose or have shifted
  • Receding gumline (teeth look longer than they used to)

If any of these sound familiar, our team can evaluate you and let you know whether LANAP® is the right fit.

How LANAP® Laser Treatment Works

One of the most common questions we hear is, “What actually happens during LANAP?” Here’s exactly what to expect, from your first visit to full recovery.

Step 1: Measuring Pocket Depth

Your LANAP-trained periodontist uses a small probe to measure the depth of the pockets between your teeth and gums. This tells us precisely where the infection is active and how advanced the disease has progressed. Healthy pockets are 1–3mm; deep pockets signal active periodontal disease.

Step 2: First Laser Pass (Bacterial Elimination)

A laser fiber about the width of three human hairs is gently inserted into the gum pocket. The PerioLase® MVP-7™ emits a specific wavelength of light that differentiates between diseased (darker) gum tissue and healthy (lighter) tissue, targeting and removing only the infected tissue and bacteria. Healthy tissue is left completely intact.

Step 3: Ultrasonic Scaling

An ultrasonic scaler loosens and removes the calculus (tartar) deposits that have hardened onto the root surfaces below the gumline. These deposits are what bacteria cling to; removing them is essential to stopping the disease from returning.

Step 4: Second Laser Pass (Sealing & Stimulation)

The laser makes a second pass to eliminate any remaining bacteria, then uses laser energy to stimulate the bone and surrounding tissue—activating the body’s own growth factors and initiating bone and gum regeneration. The laser also causes a blood clot to form, which creates a sealed, bacteria-free environment that allows healing to begin.

Step 5: Bite Adjustment

Your dentist or periodontist may adjust your bite so your teeth meet evenly, reducing the mechanical pressure on treated areas and supporting the regeneration process.

The full LANAP treatment typically takes two 2-hour appointments, treating one side of the mouth per visit. Most patients return to their normal routine the same day or the following morning. There are no stitches to remove, no surgical dressing to manage, and no lengthy recovery period to navigate.

LANAP® vs. Traditional Gum Surgery — What's the Difference?

If your dentist has previously recommended traditional periodontal surgery (also called osseous surgery or flap surgery), it’s worth understanding what sets LANAP® apart. The differences are significant.

Who Is a Good Candidate for LANAP® Near White Plains, NY?

LANAP® is an excellent option for a wide range of patients. You may be a strong candidate if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with moderate to severe gum disease (periodontitis)
  • Have tried scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) without lasting improvement
  • Experience dental anxiety and have been avoiding treatment because of the fear of surgery
  • Have diabetes, heart disease, or another systemic condition that makes surgical recovery more complicated
  • Take blood thinners or other medications that affect healing
  • Are a smoker (though quitting before and after treatment significantly improves results)
  • Have loose teeth you want to save before they require extraction
  • Simply want the most modern, least invasive option available

LANAP is also appropriate for patients of any age—from young adults dealing with aggressive periodontitis to older patients who want effective treatment with minimal recovery time.

What if you’re not sure whether you have gum disease? That’s exactly what a consultation is for. Our team will evaluate your gum health, measure pocket depths, take any necessary X-rays, and give you a clear picture of what’s happening and what your options are.

What to Expect After LANAP® Treatment — Recovery and Results

One of the biggest reasons patients choose LANAP® over traditional surgery is the recovery. Here’s what the post-treatment period actually looks like:

  • Days 1–3: Mild gum soreness is the most common experience. Most patients manage it easily with over-the-counter pain medication. There’s no open wound to worry about; the laser seals as it works.
  • Days 1–10: Avoid brushing or flossing the treated areas to protect the blood clot that’s forming. Stick to soft foods (soups, yogurt, scrambled eggs, smoothies, and mashed potatoes). Avoid smoking, which disrupts the clotting and healing process.
  • Weeks 2–4: Gum tissue begins to firm up and reattach to the tooth root. You’ll likely notice your gums looking healthier and feeling less sensitive.
  • 1–3 Months: Your first follow-up appointments will measure pocket depths to confirm healing progress. Pockets should be measurably shallower.
  • Up to 12 months: Bone regeneration continues below the gumline. Full regenerative results develop over time as your body rebuilds the structures damaged by gum disease.
  • Long-term: Periodontal disease is a chronic condition. To protect your results, you’ll need regular periodontal maintenance visits, typically every three to four months, and consistent home care. With those in place, LANAP® results are highly stable and long-lasting.

Does Insurance Cover LANAP® Treatment?

Most dental insurance plans that include periodontal disease coverage will cover LANAP® treatment because they cover treatment for periodontal disease, not a specific method. The fact that LANAP® uses a laser rather than a scalpel doesn’t disqualify it from coverage.

That said, every plan is different. At Dental Group of Westchester, we handle the insurance verification for you. We’ll confirm your benefits before treatment begins, walk you through exactly what’s covered, and work with you on any remaining balance so your gum health doesn’t have to wait. We also offer dental financing options for patients who need flexibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know if I need LANAP® or a regular cleaning?

A standard cleaning (prophylaxis) treats healthy gums or very early gingivitis. LANAP® is for patients with moderate to severe periodontal disease—meaning active infection, measurable bone loss, or pocket depths greater than 4 mm. Our team will measure your pocket depths at your consultation and tell you exactly what level of care you need. Many patients who come in thinking they just need a cleaning discover their gum disease is further along than they realized, which is exactly why we recommend not waiting.

  • Can LANAP® save loose teeth?

In many cases, yes. By eliminating the infection driving bone loss and stimulating regeneration of the bone and connective tissue that anchor your teeth, LANAP® can stabilize teeth that might otherwise require extraction. Teeth with extreme bone loss may not be candidates for saving. Your dentist will evaluate each tooth individually during your consultation.

  • Is LANAP® painful?

Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the procedure is. Local anesthetic is used, and because there’s no cutting or suturing, the post-treatment period is much more comfortable than traditional surgery. Some mild gum soreness in the days following treatment is normal and easily managed with over-the-counter medication.

  • What's the difference between LANAP® and a laser cleaning?

“Laser cleaning” typically refers to using a soft-tissue laser as a supplement to standard scaling—it’s not the same as the LANAP® protocol. True LANAP® uses a specific laser (the PerioLase® MVP-7™) in a precise, FDA-cleared sequence that includes bacterial elimination, ultrasonic scaling, and the laser stimulation that drives tissue regeneration. It’s a more comprehensive, clinically validated protocol, not a variation on a routine cleaning.

  • Will I need multiple LANAP® treatments?

The initial LANAP® protocol is typically completed in two visits. After that, most patients move to a regular periodontal maintenance schedule (usually every three to four months) to protect their results. Some patients with very advanced disease may require additional targeted treatment, but a full second course of LANAP® is uncommon when maintenance is kept up.

  • What are the signs I should come in right away?

If you’re experiencing bleeding gums that don’t resolve, significant bad breath, visible gum recession, tooth sensitivity near the gumline, or teeth that feel loose, don’t wait. Gum disease progresses—and the earlier it’s caught, the more we can do to reverse it and protect your teeth.
